Website Purpose:

Project Proposal Final:

  •      To decrease the amount of media that I take in, determine what the overall outcome of spending my time more on academics and exercise is, and publish the results so others may think about their own choices, in terms of media consumption, and how they might like to change themselves for the better.

- every week comments on my self-esteem, reading speed, number of hours spent reading, typing speed, number of hours spent on homework, and so forth, will be posted.

-An objective test  will be conducted three times throughout the course of the experiment, once on October 15th, 2011/ November 13th, 2011/December 11th, 2011. The test will be posted online and it will consist of problems including critical reading, mathematics, and writing skills, all of which will be taken from the 2011 PSAT because of its availability, of course the problems will be randomly selected from each of the topic areas. Each test will consist of approximately 32 questions and I will be given 43 minutes and 12 seconds to complete each test at each date assigned. The time is based on the amount of time given to complete each part of the test normally, but divided by three because I will only be taking 1/3 of the questions that one would usually complete in the original time. ***(The objective tests will be all multiple choice so that my own bias does not factor into the final grades, for if there were any written parts I might be inclined to state that my answers are extremely right, extremely wrong, or somewhere in between.)

-At the end of the experment I will email all of the people in the school and ask them to fill out a survey after coming to this website and viewing the results. The email will be as follows:

       Hello fellow students and teachers,

Recently I conducted an experiment where I decreased my media consumption for 57 days of the year, and I recorded my results online. Please go to

https://www.media-intel.webnode.com, look over the Data section, Conclusions section, and then go to the Feedback section where you can take a quick survey

and deliver any other comments you may have.

            P.S.

There will be smaller questionnaires posted around the school on bulletin boards from 12/12/11 to 12/14/11.

-I will also post the results on many of the bulletin boards at the school MMU to further alert the public and attempt to get people's attentions and the results will also include a short survey where students cand just put an X in a yes or no column on the board for two or three questions. After a week or so I will collect all of the surveys and add the results to the conclusions section of this website.

Project Proposal Draft:

For my community service project I plan to reduce the amount of digital media that I consume, which involves the amount of video content that I will watch, and to be sure that I broaden my horizons even further I will also listen to the music of Beethoven. Therefore I will ease myself off of movies, television, podcasts, and so forth and instead read or do some other activity such as exercise or study. Now, I have never played videogames so that will not play a part in the experiment. To show that any change at all does or does not take place I am going to record each of my daily activities which will include how many hours I read and how much time I spend watching videos and listening to Beethoven. In conclusion the basis of the experiment will be to reduce the digital media that I consume over the course of the first term, increase the amount of classical music I hear, which has been proven to increase intelligence, and I will monitor my grades as a response to these activities and compare them to my previous years. I fully understand that my age, and the difficulty of the classes will affect the grades that I get, but the overall idea and conclusion should still be present in the results. Finally I will publish the results of this experiment online and I can probably put them on some of the bulletin boards in school and of course I will not include my own name for the sake of privacy. Hopefully people will see what a major difference reading and exercising more instead of watching television and movies has on one’s grades and how much work they put into their schoolwork. I will also put the website where the results are being published on the bulletin boards so that others can respond to the results or comment on the experiment. The website is “https://www.media-intel.webnode.com/”, and this will allow you to easily access the log of the activities and the conclusions. The project will begin on day that this proposal is approved and it will end on January first. In the daily recordings I will include the number of hours spent watching videos, listening to Beethoven, reading, and at the end of the semester, or relatively close I will include the grades I received for the semester.
